Volcanoes of the Canaries

Tuesday, July 24. 2007

The Canaries is one of the best places in the world to study volcanoes and volcanic processes, even though the islands are rarely identified as one of the biggest volcanic complexes of the planet. The variety of rock formations and volcanic structures monopolise the landscape almost completely.

Although we inmediately associate the idea of volcanoes with destruction, we must remember that they created the islands, shaping them to their own whims sice their activity began twenty million years ago. However, the most interesting aspect is the so-called historic eruptions, as there exist documentary evidence.

In Tenerife there is evidence of four indisputable eruptions. The first of them, in 1705, was preceded by a week of earth tremors. On 5th January, the activity resumed with greater intensity and lava flowed from over 30 different craters. This activity was responsible fot the formation of the Fasnia, Siete Fuentes and Arafo volcanoes.

A year later, the eruption of Montaña Negra began. During the 9 days of activity it destroyed most of the town of Garachico and its port, which was the most important of the island at that time.

1798 saw the eruption of Chaorra or Las Narices del Teide. It lasted three months and was the longest of the eruptions which occurred on Tenerife in chronicled history.

The eruption of Chinyero, which lasted 10 days, was the last to occur on Tenerife.

Puerto de la Cruz July Festivities 2007

Wednesday, July 4. 2007

We have not been sent yet the Cultural Programme for the Fiestas de Julio (July local festivities) but we invite you to ask for the programme at the Tourist Office next to the Town Hall, as there is a list there of events, processions, ect. Puerto de la Cruz is a very busy town during those dates, so we recommend to park directly on the Priavet parkings. In any case, these are the most important events:

  • Satuday 14th July: Parade anouncing the Fiestas of Virgen del Carmen.
  • Sunday 15th July: Procession of  “Gran Poder De Dios†from the Main Church Nuestra Señora de Francia.
  • Monday 16th July: Procession.
  • Tuesday 17th July: The biggest bank holiday in Puerto with the “Embarcación de la Virgen del Carmen†taking the Madonna on a boat into the sea, a very intensting and spectacular religious scene from 18:00 or 19:00 hrs, although the “fiesta†begins on the morning. Try to park on the parking under the bus station.

TenerifeCountryVillas.com will soon post you some photos of last year festivities.

The Teide inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List

Thursday, June 28. 2007

The World Heritage Committee today inscribed two natural sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List: Teide National Park (Spain); Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathian (Slovakia, Ukraine).

Situated on the island of Tenerife, Teide National Park covers 18,990 ha and features the Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcano that, at 3,718 m, is the highest peak in Spain. Standing 7,500m above the ocean floor, it is regarded as the world’s third tallest volcanic structure and is situated in a spectacular environment. The visual impact of the site is all the greater due to atmospheric conditions that create constantly changing textures and tones in the landscape and a ‘sea of clouds’ that forms a visually impressive backdrop to the mountain. Teide is of global importance in providing evidence of the geological processes that underpin the evolution of oceanic islands, complementing those of volcanic properties already on the World Heritage List, such as the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (U.S.A.).

Restaurant Crisol - Candelaria

Thursday, May 31. 2007

Last Wednesday 30th may, considering that it was holiday (Canary Islands' Day), we decided to go to Candelaria. Apart from the obligatory visit to the Basilica, we take a walk through the new litoral of the city, a magnific example of how to improve the coast preserving the natural environment.

It's a pleasure to walk just in front of the blue sea, with wide resting places with swings for the childs.

After swimming a while we decided to have lunch in one of the restaurants that you can find there. At random we took a table in one called Crisol: very good the fish made croquettes, tasty the "pasta" and excelent the sirloin with mushrooms and lentil purée. Don't miss the apple pie with vanilla icecream, it's delicious!

TenerifeCountryVillas.com will include restaurant Crisol  (Candelaria) in its list of recommendations to the clients staying in this zone of Tenerife.
